FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of music do you sing?

Our repertoire covers traditional works from the classic choral tradition, but often includes arrangements of folk, spiritual and popular songs, all sung with careful attention to detail and musicianship. Check out our Repertoire page for specifics.

Is there a mission statement?

The choir provides a musical haven where women committed to choral music can achieve choral excellence, in a spirit of harmony and elation.

How often does the Choir perform?

Elation generally gives three performances a year - in May, September and December. There are generally 'carry-over' items from one concert to another, and one year to another.

Do singers have to sing in performances?

Yes.  Elation is not a 'drop-in' choir. We are formally structured and balanced to create the best choral sound. H owever any singers who know they are not available on the performance date may rehearse with the choir until the two pre-performance rehearsals. This allows for the balancing and positioning of choir members.

Does Elation ever sing unaccompanied?

About 50 percent of the repertoire is sung a cappella.

How many are in the choir?

In December 2006, there were 35 active members. Elation has an upper limit of 48.

How long has Elation been going?

Since 18 January 2001.

How did Elation begin?

In December 2000, Leigh was asked to form an ad hoc choir to sing at The Age carol service at St James' Old Cathedral, in West Melbourne. The rehearsal and performance were so enjoyable and successful that the group was resolved to meet again. Thus Elation was born!

On Thursday 18 January 2001, Elation began rehearsing in St Andrew's Uniting Church hall, Whitehorse Road, Box Hill.   The first concert was two months later in St Andrew's Uniting Church at a 'Food for the Barn' Charity Concert.
